The Story Behind This Icon

Saint Panteleimon was a physician in Nicomedia (modern-day Turkey) who converted to Christianity and used his medical skills to heal the sick freely in the name of Christ — earning him the title Anargyros, meaning “one who takes no silver.” He was martyred around 305 AD under Emperor Maximian, and his relics were venerated across the Byzantine world for their miraculous healing properties.
